Paula Barreras, MD

2023 CLINICAL RESEARCH TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP IN PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Title/Institution: Neuroimmunology Fellow, Johns Hopkins University

Project Title: “Identifying Biomarkers and Pathogenic mechanisms in Sarcoidosis-Associated Small Fiber Neuropathy”

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disorder that often involves small fiber neuropathy (SFN), which causes chronic pain and reduced quality of life.

Dr. Barreras’ project will assess whether SFN is driven by inflammation. This project also aims to identify factors predicting severity and disability due to SFN in sarcoidosis. This research will lead to a better understanding of sarcoidosis-associated small-fiber neuropathy which could lead to the development of targeted therapies, and result in tools that can help counsel patients about prognosis and management decisions.
