Eleanor Thomas, MD, PhD

2024 Richard Olney Clinician Scientist Development Award in ALS

Title/Institution: Senior Associate, Department of Neurology, Emory University

Project Title: “Investigation of Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) Disruption in ALS and Identification of Biomarkers”

Project Summary:
Research suggests that ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) involves the breakdown of the blood brain barrier (BBB), a protective barrier in the brain, and inflammation. People with ALS have higher levels of IgM, a type of protein, in their blood, which suggests that the BBB is not working property. This may cause the immune system to attack the brain, leading to ALS.

Dr. Thomas’s research will study blood samples from ALS patients to better understand the progression of ALS and potential treatments for this fatal disease.
