2024 Lawrence M. Brass, MD Stroke Research Award

Title/Institution: Physician Investigator and Instructor in Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital

Project Title: “Gut-brain metabolites as risk predictors of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI)”

Project Summary: Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment (PSCI), which occurs in about 60% of stroke survivors, increases a person’s risk of dementia. African American and Latino individuals are disproportionately affected.

Dr. Garcia Guarniz’s project suggests that certain substances involved in metabolism are responsible both for increased risk of stroke and for PSCI post-stroke, and that whether a person has these substances depends both on genetics and diet. If we can identify which substances affect stroke and PSCI risk, we can develop innovative treatments to prevent or lessen stroke and PSCI.

$97,500 is needed to fully fund this $172,500 grant.
