Gordon Smith, MD

A. Gordon Smith MD is the Kenneth and Diane Wright Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University. His NIH funded research team focuses on peripheral neuropathy in diabetes and obesity. He has a particular interest in biomarker development and novel clinical trial design in peripheral neuropathy. He is PI of the Topiramate as a Disease Modifying Therapy for Cryptogenic Sensory Peripheral Neuropathy (TopCSPN) trial being performed by NeuroNEXT. TopCSPN is the first large scale randomized trial of a potential treatment for CSPN. He is also PI of the Activity for Diabetic Neuropathy (ADAPT) Trial. Dr. Smith serves as Chair of the Education Committee of the American Academy of Neurology, an organization for which he also serves on numerous other committees and workgroups. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Neurology Institute. Dr. Smith is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Peripheral Nerve Society and a past member and officer of the Board of Trustees of the American Brain Foundation.
